Introducing Threads from Meta: The New Text-Based App

Nadine Campbell

ACE Entrepreneurs Marketing Update by Nadine Campbell

Mark Zuckerberg recently announced the initial version of Threads, an app built by the Instagram team for sharing with text. Starting today, Threads is available in more than 100 countries globally.

Whether you’re a creator, a business or a casual poster, Threads offers a new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations. Soon, Meta plan to make Threads compatible with the open, interoperable social networks that they believe can shape the future of the internet.

What you need to know about Threads:

  • Threads is now available for all Instagram account types from creators to businesses to personal accounts in more than 100 countries (at this time Threads is not available in the European Union, European Economic Area, or Switzerland).

  • Threads is available for iOS and Android. People can download the app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

  • People and businesses log in to Threads using their Instagram account.

  • Usernames on Threads will be the same as the corresponding Instagram account username and cannot be claimed by another profile.

  • At this time, there are no ads or monetisation features on Threads. Meta says their priority is to build consumer value first and foremost, which will allow them to explore how to build business value.

  • As with all of Meta products, they say they’re taking safety seriously, so they will enforce Instagram’s Community Guidelines on content in the app.

Meta encourages businesses to experiment with Threads as part of their organic social strategy where it makes sense. We've also got the full Threads Q&A from the most popular questions below:

Q: When will Threads be available for businesses?

A: Threads is available for all Instagram account types from creators to businesses to personal accounts (in countries where it is available). While we encourage businesses to experiment with Threads as part of their organic social strategy where it makes sense, it is an early experience.

Q: Are Threads available globally?

A: Threads is available in more than 100 countries globally starting today, and we are hoping to add more by the end of the year. At this time Threads is not available in the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

Q: Can I advertise on Threads?

A: At this time, there are no ads or monetization features on Threads. Our priority is to build consumer value first and foremost, which allows us to explore how to build business value in a way that doesn’t compromise the consumer experience.

Q: How do I secure a username for my brand?

A: Since you log in to Threads using your Instagram account, your username will be the same as your Instagram username and cannot be claimed by another profile. If you update your username on Instagram, that will be reflected on Threads.

Q: What safety measures are in place for threads?

A: As with all our products, we’re taking safety seriously. We’ll enforce Instagram’s Community Guidelines on content in the app. From the start, you can control who can reply to you – choosing between anyone, only accounts you follow or only accounts that are @ mentioned. Use two-factor authentication to keep your account safe, and the block and reporting flows you trust from Instagram to protect your well-being.

Q: How are you protecting teens on Threads?

A: Protecting young people on Threads is important to us.

  • Teen accounts will be private by default.

  • We will also have a suite of actions to enable teens (and all users) to stop engaging with accounts they don't want to see including Block, Report, Mute, and Restrict. Post Warnings (warnings which tell a user if the content they are about to post is potentially offensive).

  • Teens will also be defaulted into "only people I follow" for mention controls.

  • We'll also have the ability to hide like counts and mute notifications.

  • The Sensitive Content Control will be respected from the user's Instagram account.

  • Supervision tools and insights will be available for parents and guardians to help support their teens, as well as take-a-break reminders.

Q: Is there an integration with any Instagram Shopping features?

A: Not at this time.

Q: Will you integrate Threads within Meta Business Suite for easier management?

A: We do not have plans to integrate with Meta Business Suite this year.

Q: Can you schedule posts? Will Threads be integrated with 3rd party publishing APIs?

A: Not at this time.

Q: Will accounts on Threads be geo and age-gated the way they are on Instagram?

A: Yes, geo and age limits from Instagram will carry over to Threads.

Q: What is the character limit for threads?

A: Posts can be up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length

Q: What is the Fediverse and how do your plans to make Threads interoperable fit into that?

A: We plan to make Threads part of the fediverse, a social network of different servers operated by third parties that are connected and can communicate with each other. We’re building Threads on the ActivityPub protocol – a set of decentralised standards for social networking. Soon, we will make Threads interoperable with other apps that also support the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon and WordPress. Other services including Tumblr have shared plans to support the ActivityPub protocol in the future.

This means in the future your posts can appear on other apps and services, allowing you to reach new audiences and grow your audience with no added effort. In addition, you’ll have the option to take your content and move to other services like Mastodon at any time.

Q: Can I access Threads on the web?

A: Yes, you can view Threads on the web but you cannot post at this time. To access Threads on the web, navigate to www.threads.net.

Q: When you sign up, do you automatically follow the accounts you follow on Instagram? Or do you have to go through your follower list one by one and select 'Follow' on Instagram?

A: When you sign up for Threads, you'll have the option to 'Follow all' of your existing Instagram connections. Alternatively, you can individually select the accounts you wish to follow, including those you want to automatically follow as soon as they join Threads.

Q: When I join, will I retain my Instagram followers?

A: People who join Threads can bulk follow their Instagram connections in one click or select individual accounts to follow – allowing creators like you to quickly build an audience.

Q: Is the feed chronological?

A: No. In the feed, you will see a mix of content from accounts you follow as well as recommendations. In order for content to be recommended on Threads, it must meet our Community Guidelines and Recommendation Guidelines.

Q: Do I have to pay for verification?

A: Your verification status on Threads is connected to Instagram.
